  • Your IALCS student will be provided a Chromebook for use in the classroom and at home in strict adherence to the instructions of his/her teachers. This document provides students and their parents/guardians with information about taking care of the equipment and being a good digital citizen.

The use of IAL technology is a privilege and not a right. Everything done on any IAL device may be monitored by the school.  Inappropriate use of technology can result in limited/banned computer use, removal from class, disciplinary consequences, receiving a failing grade and/or legal action. Students and parents/guardians are responsible for reviewing the attached “Appropriate Use of Technology Policy” document.

    Ownership of the Chromebook

Inwood Academy for Leadership retains sole right of possession of the Chromebook.  Chromebooks are lent to the students for educational purposes only.  Administrative staff and faculty retain the right to collect and/or inspect the Chromebook at any time, including electronic remote access.

Responsibility for Chromebook: Students are responsible for the device issued to them and must adhere to:

    • IAL’s Appropriate Use of Technology Policy (following page)
    • All established classroom procedures when using Chromebooks.
    • Students must treat their device with care and never leave it in an unsecured location.
    • Students must keep their device in a protective case or backpack when traveling.
    • Students must promptly report any problems to their classroom teacher.
    • Students may not remove/alter the serial number or other identification tags.
    • Students may not attempt to remove/change the physical structure of Chromebook, including keys.
    • Students may not attempt to install/run any unauthorized application on the Chromebook.

    Responsibility for Electronic Data

Student users should have no expectations of privacy for any data that is, or was, stored on the Chromebook, school network or user application, and are given no guarantees that data will be retained or destroyed.

    Warranty and Insurance

IAL will repair/replace damaged Chromebooks resulting from normal use.  Students (parents/guardians) will be held responsible for repair costs relating to accidental breakage or misuse by student(s). Under IAL’s insurance policy, there is a $100 deductible per instance. Loss/theft of the device is also a student’s responsibility and will result in the student being charged $150 to partly cover the cost of purchasing a new device.

Digital Citizenship: Students must follow the six conditions of being a good digital citizen

Respect Yourself: I’ll show respect for myself through my choices. I’ll select online names that are appropriate and consider the information and images that I post online. I’ll consider what personal information about my life, experiences, experimentation or relationships I post. I will not be obscene.

Protect Yourself: I’ll ensure that the information, images and materials I post online will not put me at risk. I won’t publish my personal details, contact details or schedule of my activities. I’ll report any inappropriate behavior directed at me and protect my passwords, accounts and resources.

Respect Others: I’ll show respect to others, by not using online social media to antagonize, bully, harass or stalk other people. I’ll show respect for other people in my choice of websites - not visiting sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. I will not abuse my rights of access nor enter other people's private spaces/communications.

Protect Others: I’ll protect others by reporting abuse and not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications. I’ll moderate unacceptable materials and conversations, and not visit sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate.

Respect Intellectual Property: I’ll request permission to use digital resources and suitably cite any and all websites, books, media etc. I’ll acknowledge all primary sources and validate information. I’ll use and abide by the fair use rules.

Protect Intellectual Property: I’ll request to use software and media others produce. I’ll use free/open source alternatives rather than pirating content. I’ll purchase, license and register all software, music and media, refraining from distributing these in a manner that violates licensing. I’ll act with integrity.
